PrestaShop promotional countdown: give shoppers a real deadline without fake urgency

A product countdown can clarify a genuine campaign period, but it must match the actual promotion and disappear or change state when the offer ends.

Countdowns can be helpful near a product's price when a real promotional deadline exists. They should never substitute for accurate prices, clear terms or verifiable stock information.

Place the timer close to the price

Under the displayed product price, a compact countdown is easier to understand than a large overlay. Keep it distinct from delivery estimates and availability labels. Test the layout with long product names, discounts and multiple screen widths, especially on mobile.

Separate the campaign period from price calculations

A countdown indicates time; it should not independently change product pricing. Confirm that the campaign's start and end times align with the actual PrestaShop price rules. Different time zones or cached pages can cause a timer and the final basket amount to disagree.

Consider product and listing pages

A product page offers sufficient room for an explanation. Category listings require a shorter version that does not crowd the price or purchase button. Decide where the timer is genuinely useful, and avoid multiplying animated elements across many products.

Define expiration behaviour

At zero, remove the promotional message, replace it with accurate information or stop the campaign display. Do not let a visitor continue to see a supposedly active discount after its end. Test cached pages and the checkout process after expiry.

Verify customer-specific views

Different currencies, groups, customer-specific prices and tax contexts can alter promotional amounts. Ensure the timer never claims a benefit unavailable to the logged-in customer. Test a guest and several applicable customer groups.

A credible campaign example

For a weekend offer, publish the true end date, display a restrained counter under the price and link to the terms. Test the price, timer and cart before, during and after the campaign. Consistent information builds trust better than flashing scarcity warnings.

Frequently asked questions

Does the countdown automatically create a discount?

No. The actual pricing rule must be configured separately and verified at checkout.

Should the timer restart for every visitor?

Not for a fixed public offer. A shared deadline should remain the same for everyone concerned.
