A slow mobile page does not automatically need another caching extension. The cause may be a large hero image, a delayed script, unstable layout or server response. Diagnose the bottleneck first and validate every intervention.

Inspect what appears first

Measure the main visible content and the LCP element. Check whether a large image or web font delays rendering. Prioritise correctly sized assets needed above the fold and avoid lazy-loading the essential hero without understanding its effect.

Test interaction responsiveness

Use INP and browser profiling to identify scripts that block interaction. Menus, filters, forms and add-to-cart buttons should respond promptly. Reduce unnecessary JavaScript and verify that deferring scripts does not break dependencies.

Look for shifting layouts

CLS can worsen when images lack dimensions, advertisements arrive late or dynamic bars push content down. Reserve space and test cookie banners, promotional notices and loading states. Visual stability matters as much as raw download speed.

Cut downloads that add little value

Check scripts, CSS, fonts, trackers and image variants in the network panel. Load only the features actually used on each page. Use modern image formats when configured correctly, with responsive sizes and practical caching rules.

Regression-test the real features

After optimisation, test navigation, search, product variants, cart, checkout and contact forms on representative devices. A higher performance score means little if the site's business functions become unreliable.

Track a small set of before-and-after figures

Record LCP, INP, CLS, network weight and key user-task outcomes for comparable conditions. Separate laboratory measurements from real-user data. Prioritise sustained improvements over one unusually favourable benchmark run.

Frequently asked questions

Does a high PageSpeed score guarantee a fast site for every user?

No. Device, network and real-user conditions vary, and lab scores are only one source of evidence.

Should I install multiple optimisation plugins together?

Not automatically. Overlapping caches and script optimisations can conflict; establish the cause and test one change at a time.
