PrestaShop free-shipping progress bar: explain how close a cart is to the threshold

A free-shipping progress bar can help shoppers understand delivery conditions. Its value depends on accurate calculations, clear wording and correct display in the cart and product pages.

A useful shipping bar is more than a decorative percentage. It should explain the exact amount missing before an order qualifies and avoid misleading customers when exclusions, discounts or carrier restrictions apply.

Define the amount used in the calculation

Decide whether the threshold is based on tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive prices, and whether discounts are deducted. Shipping fees should not normally become part of the merchandise subtotal unless the commercial rule explicitly says so. Document the eligible cart value and keep it consistent with the actual carrier rules.

Choose cart and product-page placement independently

The cart shows real quantities and selected products, so it provides a reliable summary. Product pages can preview the benefit, but any calculation may depend on the existing basket or customer context. Allow each placement to be enabled separately so the merchant can avoid redundant messages.

Use clear messages at every stage

Before the threshold, state “Add €12 more for free shipping” when that is genuinely accurate. At the threshold, confirm eligibility subject to the published delivery conditions. Do not imply all shipping services are free if the offer applies only to selected carriers, regions or order types.

Test unusual cart situations

Check quantity changes, coupons, excluded products, combinations, currency changes, different tax addresses and product removal. Verify that the threshold updates after asynchronous cart changes. A progress bar displaying an outdated amount is worse than no bar at all.

Keep checkout simple

The component should not cover buttons, delay cart updates or compete with mandatory delivery information. Use accessible text alongside visual progress, so users who cannot distinguish colours still understand the remaining amount. Test mobile and guest checkout.

Example acceptance cases

Test a basket below, exactly at and above the threshold; repeat with a discount code and a non-eligible delivery zone. Compare the message with the actual shipping methods offered at checkout. Document any exceptional rules displayed in the interface.

Frequently asked questions

Can the bar appear only in the cart?

Yes. Cart and product-page display can be configured independently when the module supports both positions.

Does reaching a numerical threshold guarantee free delivery?

Only if the rest of the published eligibility conditions are met, including zone and carrier restrictions.
