Separate design from URL migration

Changing a PrestaShop theme does not require changing product and category URLs. A visual redesign and a URL migration create different risks. First list which changes are necessary for users and which are merely cosmetic; preserve established routes where possible.

Inventory valuable pages

Crawl current product, category, brand, CMS and editorial pages. Export titles, headings and core content. Combine crawl data with search and analytics reports to identify high-value URLs. This inventory becomes the acceptance checklist for the new site.

Map every changed URL

Mark each legacy URL as retained, redirected, removed or consolidated. Use direct permanent redirects to genuinely equivalent pages. Do not point every missing product to the homepage. Review language routes, variants and canonical tags, and avoid redirect chains.

Protect useful information

Retain technical specifications, shipping details, purchase guidance and meaningful contextual links when redesigning templates. Rewrite content only with a clear purpose. Better visuals cannot compensate for missing information on pages users rely on to make purchasing decisions.

Keep navigation crawlable

Use real anchor links for menu items, breadcrumbs and category navigation. Test canonical tags, heading hierarchy, internal links and pagination behaviour. Search engines and shoppers should both be able to navigate without depending on hidden JavaScript-only actions.

Test speed and checkout

Audit new images, fonts and scripts on mobile. Check variants, quantity selection, cart and payments with real workflows. Prevent the staging environment from being indexed and monitor sitemaps, redirects, server errors and search performance after launch.

Review checklist

  • Inventory current URLs
  • Prepare equivalent redirects
  • Preserve useful content
  • Verify canonicals and links
  • Monitor search errors
