In an online shop, an announcement can be useful, but an oversized or stale bar quickly becomes a distraction. Good configuration separates the content, position, persistence and visibility dates.

Rank messages by importance

A genuine shipping delay deserves priority over a generic promotional slogan. State the consequence for customers, relevant dates and where to find details. Avoid stacking multiple banners with competing calls to action or alarming language for routine changes.

Separate position from sticky behaviour

Top or bottom placement does not determine whether the bar follows the visitor during scrolling. Keep those controls independent. A fixed bar must not obscure menus, account tools, cookie notices or the mobile add-to-cart area. Check narrow screens and browser zoom.

Protect readability on sales pages

Choose sufficient contrast and clear typography. If dismissible, the close control must work by keyboard and touch, with a meaningful label. Make sure important legal or delivery terms remain discoverable after the banner is closed.

Schedule activation and expiry

Promotions and exceptional closures need a start and end date based on a known time zone. Retire outdated statements automatically or assign an editor to remove them. A permanently outdated offer is especially damaging in a commercial context.

Minimise performance impact

The bar should not load unnecessary libraries or introduce layout shifts after initial rendering. Reserve the appropriate space if it appears above the header. Verify that cache layers do not keep serving the previous campaign after its scheduled end.

Test a campaign before publication

Review home, category, product, cart and checkout pages in desktop and mobile layouts. Test dismissal, fixed and normal positioning, all links and dates. Confirm that another critical banner does not cover the same screen area.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a fixed banner at the bottom?

Yes, if the implementation supports separate settings for position and sticky behaviour, and overlap tests pass.

Should a promotion stay visible after its closing date?

No. Expired campaign messages should be removed or replaced with accurate information.
