An announcement bar can make an exceptional closure, a change of hours or a service update immediately visible. The aim is not to add more messages to every page, but to give visitors reliable information without interrupting their journey.
Write a message visitors understand immediately
Prefer “Orders paused from 12 to 15 November” to a vague “Important notice”. State what changes, who is affected, the applicable dates and where to find details. Promotional announcements should specify conditions and an end date. A minor operational change does not need alarmist language.
Position the bar without hiding content
Above the header, a bar fits naturally into page flow. A sticky top bar remains visible but permanently reduces the available height. At the bottom, check possible overlap with consent banners, mobile navigation and floating buttons. Top versus bottom and sticky versus non-sticky are separate settings. Test narrow screens and browser zoom.
Check contrast, closing controls and keyboard access
Verify text contrast, readable font sizes and a sufficiently large close control. Give that control a meaningful accessible name. If dismissals are remembered, decide what happens when a new announcement replaces the previous one: users should still see genuinely new information. Test with keyboard and assistive technologies.
Schedule visibility instead of forgetting old notices
Summer holiday hours shown in December damage credibility. Configure start and end dates for temporary messages, accounting for the website time zone. Assign responsibility for updates. Long-standing policies often belong on a dedicated page, with a brief notice pointing to it.
Measure usefulness rather than treating notices as ads
Check whether support questions decrease and whether visitors can still complete their main tasks. Click counts alone do not prove that a banner helped. After installation, test the cart on an online shop and the contact form and mobile menu on a brochure site.
A practical example and test plan
An agency announces “Our office closes Friday at 4 p.m.; replies resume Monday”. The non-sticky notice sits above navigation, links to contact information and expires on Monday. Verify dismissal, return visits, mobile layout and the destination link. The notice should communicate the change, not obstruct the site.
Frequently asked questions
Should the announcement bar always be sticky?
No. Persistent placement may suit an urgent, very short message, while normal page flow better suits a secondary announcement. Compare both behaviours on mobile.
Can a banner replace a detailed information page?
Not when important conditions apply. Use the banner as a summary and link to the full opening hours, shipping information or promotional rules.
